Just a few days ago, on 13th of April, New Zealand government announced their plans to stop the exportation of live animals by sea.
WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM?
Transportation by sea is always long-distance and is known to be extremely stressful for animals and their risk of injury and disease is much higher. They are often put in really small areas, all pushed together in the heat, barely
eating and the rough seas bring to the stress all together. All the things mentioned have such a negative impact on animals, that results in many dying before arriving at their destination.
New Zealand is known for its high standards of animal welfare. But this ban, needs some adjustments if they want it to work. It will affect a lot of farmers, exports, companies, importers and that type of exportation was a feature of
their farming system for as long as they know.
Since it’s important to maintain all the trade relationships and partners, they re all committed to working together during the transition from the shipment of livestock.
